Rojas dial

Universal time-computing dial/Rojas dial for latitudes 0°-90° North. This instrument comprises a brass disc with a shaped handle with a slot down the centre. The handle is pivoted to the centre of the back of the instrument and its obverse side is decorated with leaf motifs. The disc carries a Rojas projection. It has a degree circle and the parallels of declination are drawn from Tropic to Tropic, marked with zodiac symbols and also with the months. The hour-lines are drawn perpendicular to the declination parallels. Pivoted to the centre by a screw are two brass struts that are each similarly pivoted to another strut. This second pair of struts are pivoted together by a screw which slides in the slot of the handle. The reverse side of the dial contains a radial table of latitudes consisting of the major cities of Europe.

This rectilinear dial carries a Rojas projection, but the index and plumb bob, which would have been used for measuring the altitude of the sun to calculate the date, are missing. The pivoted struts on the front of the instrument appear to be a later addition. Engraved on the obverse side is the signature, 'Haye AParis'.
