Augsburg dial
Augsburg dial for latitudes 0°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The compass is oriented incorrectly. It has an eight-point rose, the magnetic variation is indicated as 20° West of North and the needle is very rusty. The remainder of the dial-plate is engraved with floral designs. The latitude arc is divided [0°]-[90°] and the hour ring is decorated with a wheatsheaf design. The back of the compass is engraved with a table of latitudes of a few places such as, 'Madrit 4, Paris 48 and Corfu 39'. The selection of places is unusual with the inclusion of various Mediterranean locations, but also including Reval (Talinn) in the north of the Baltic. It is a simple dial of higher quality than some from this date. 'I.G.Vogler' is signed on the back of the compass.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
