Augsburg dial
Augsburg dial for latitudes 6°-90° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The dial-plate is lacquered. The compass has cardinal points named in Latin and a central eight-point rose. The glass plate is cracked. The remainder of the dial-plate carries a wind-ring and is engraved with decorative patterns of waves over bricks. The wind-ring has sixteen points marked in German and by-points indicated by lines. The latitude arc is divided [6°]-[90°] and the hour ring is decorated with a repeating pattern. Hinged to the South side of the dial-plate, the Plumb-bob support is elaborately shaped, engraved with foliate decoration and pierced to accommodate the plumb bob. There is a flower at the centre of the compass back and the brace for the plumb-bob support on the reverse side is shaped and decorated.
The dial has a very worn black octagonal leather case with blue silk lining and a hook fastener. A brass disc is attached to the inside of the lid, engraved with the initials 'L.T.M.', and with a table of latitudes, headed 'Elev. Poli'. The table is very unusual, ranging from Batavia (Jakarta) to Archangel in Russia.
This dial is uncommon for an Augsburg dial in having a wind-ring set around the compass bowl. It appears that there was once a wind vane set over the compass similar to the one still present on AST0284. The back of the instrument looks rather unfinished, with various scores and scratches from practice strokes.
