Butterfield dial

Butterfield dial for latitudes 40°-60° North. Standard dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-

There is a single hour scale divided IIII-XII, I-VIII. The remainder of the edge is decorated with a leaf design and there is a central leaf decoration. The silvered brass compass has an eight-point rose with no names for the points. It is offset 40° East of North and the replacement needle is surmounted by a brass cylindrical pivot. The latitude scale on the gnomon is adjustable for latitudes 4[0]°-60° and is decorated with acanthus leaves. The gnomon brace is also decorated with leaves.

The reverse side of the dial is engraved with a wheatsheaf pattern along the edge and around the compass bowl. The dial has a black fishskin octagonal case with red velvet lining (much faded) and a metal hook fastener. The leather is very worn on the base, revealing wood.

Like the dial by Haye (AST0256), this one has only one hour scale despite the adjustable gnomon. The scale is drawn for a latitude of 46°, compatible with that of Lyon (45° 46') where the dial was manufactured. There are no towns marked on the back, suggesting that this instrument was made specifically for the latitude of Lyon, but with the option to use it elsewhere if the owner so desired. The wheatsheaf-style design on the back is far more common on English instruments than French. The compass and the supporting leg are silvered brass. It is signed 'Nourry ALyon'.
