Scaphe dial

Scaphe dial for latitude 42° North, in the form of a painted wooden dish with a lid. Both the dish and lid are lathe-turned. The dial has a turquoise background, painted gold stars and the hour-lines are engraved in gold for 11-23 (Italian hours). A brass compass is set on the meridian line with a line marking the magnetic variation at 8° West of North. The needle is blued, in the form of an arrow and surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot with a glass plate over all. A vertical brass pin gnomon is also set on the meridian line.

The lid has a turquoise background with gold patterns and there is a section missing from its wall. A coat of arms is set within a circle, featuring swans and a crest. This is the only single-latitude European scaphe dial in the collection. The coat of arms painted in the lid is doubtless that of the first owner.
