Greenwich, From the Park
The legend states this was engraved for Thomas Dugdale's 'England and Wales Delineated', first published in about 1845 but reissued several times. Surprisingly for something said to be drawn by Thomas Shepherd, a well known London topographer, its representation of the buildings of Greenwich - the Queen's House and its adjoining wings (at this time the Greenwich Hospital School) and the Hospital complex itself - is total nonsense, with little improvement in the more distant prospect. It is almost certainly lifted from Tombleson's similar but earlier plate (c. 1834), which is more atmospheric though scarcely more accurate (see PAD2247).
