Greenwich Hospital: the King William dome and Painted Hall (exterior)
This drawing relates to a print entitled 'The Hall of Greenwich Hospital, Kent' engraved by J. Storer after a drawing by F[rederick] Nash and published by Storer and J. Greig of Pentonville, 1 January 1801 (PAD2202). Both show the view along what is now College Walk across the north front of the Queen Mary and King William Courts of Greenwich Hospital, taken from the south front of the Queen Anne Court. Only the north corner of the Queen Mary colonnade is visible on the left, the main subject being the King William pavilion and Dome, fronting the Painted Hall, with the south-east corner of the King Charles Court also just visible. Beyond, the West Gate of the Hospital appears in its original pre-1840s position, closer to the buildings than today. This drawing is much smaller than the print and probably therefore a copy from it.
