Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial
Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial for 50° North (0°-70° North for equinoctial dial). Standard Dieppe magnetic azimuth dial (see related terms) except for the following details:-
The case has silver hook fasteners and hinges. All the markings are in black and there is no Dieppe-type ornamentation. The dial is split into two leaves. On leaf Ia, the centre of the dial is occupied by a silver disc engraved with armorial bearings featuring three lions. Leaf Ib shows an hour scale numbered anticlockwise I-XII, I-XII. Leaf IIa displays a silver elliptical scale numbered anticlockwise IIII-XII, I-VIII, decorated with foliate engraving.
There is also a printed compass card with a decorative border and a table of latitudes in two columns for places in Europe, largely French. The table is surrounded by an engraved border of sea monsters and flourishes. The glass covering plate is held in place by a twisted silver wire ring. Leaf IIb has a date scale divided to month and a silver pin for the rotating volvelle. On all four sides, the spandrels are engraved with flowering plants and the sides are engraved with a zigzag border. The decoration (of flowering plants and sea monsters) on this instrument is non-standard. The arms at the centre of leaf Ia are probably those of the first owner.
