Inigo Jones, 1573 - 1652
Print. Derived, but most probably at second-hand given the date, from the Van Dyck oil portrait formerly in the Walpole collection at Houghton, which was acquired en bloc by Catherine the Great of Russia and is now in the Hermitage, St Petersburg. The immediate source is likely have been the similar but rather better mezzotint of 1775 by Valentine Green. Both images preserve the aspect of the oil painting, which shows Jones turned to his left (viewer's right). Van Dyck's related drawing, now in the Duke of Devonshire's collection at Chatsworth, is also right-facing but includes the sitter's right hand holding a paper. [PvdM]
