String-gnomon dial
String-gnomon dial for latitudes 46°-50° North. On the front of this octagonal dial is a horizontal sun and moon dial surrounding a compass with scales engraved on a silver ring on the gilt-brass base-plate. The outer scale is an hour scale followed by a lunar-age scale, within which is a rotatable silver ring marked with hours. Three rivets allow the ring to be rotated. The silvered compass at the centre has the cardinal points named in Latin and an arrow drawn on the compass bowl to indicate the magnetic variation at 10° West of North. There is a brass strut across the compass glass for the attachment of the gnomon. The gnomon support is shaped, engraved and pierced at the lower end for the plumb line and bob (which are both missing). The upper section is marked with a scale of latitudes. A string gnomon is attached between the gnomon support and the dial-plate.
On the back of the dial is a shaped and decorated gnomon support brace and the maker's signature, 'Johann Willebrand in Augspurg 48'. The base of the compass is engraved with tables of latitudes for different towns and cities around Europe (mainly in Germany). The dial has an octagonal black morocco leather case with faded pink lining. The quality of engraving on the dial is high, as would be expected from such an accomplished maker.
For more information regarding this dial please refer to the OUP & NMM catalogue, 'Sundials at Greenwich'.
