Horizontal dial

Portable horizontal dial for latitude 48° North. The obverse side has decoration in all four corners and displays an hour-circle. There are repeating decorations around the rim of the centrally placed compass. The gnomon is intricately shaped and folds flat when not in use. The reverse side features a decorated silver gnomon brace. The compass was originally silvered but much has been lost. The cardinal points are marked in Latin and the magnetic variation is shown by an engraved arrow at 8° West of North. A blued needle, in the form of an arrow, is surmounted by a brass pyramidal pivot. There is a glass plate over all. The base is engraved with towns at latitude 48 degrees such as Vienna, Paris and Zurich. The dial is supported by three turned brass legs.

While the main characteristics of this dial are German, the decoration is closer to French designs.
