John Benbow, Esqr. Vice Admiral of the Blue Squadron. Engraved by H R Cook from an original by Sir Godfrey Kneller in the collection of the late Admiral Sir Peter Denis
Technique includes stipple engraving. The original painting was presumably a version or copy of BHC2546, painted by Kneller for the Royal Collection either under William III or (as a posthumous portrait) Queen Anne, and was one of those presented to Greenwich Hospital in 1823 by George IV as the foundation gift of the Naval Gallery at Greenwich. BHC2546 has the right forearm raised across the lower torso, holding a hanger (short sword), which the original used here may not have done. Vice-Admiral Sir Peter Denis, to whom it reportedly belonged was born in 1713 and died in 1778. This print was engraved to accompany a biographical article on Benbow in the 'Naval Chronicle' of 30 September 1808. [PvdM 1/22]
