Sr George Rooke
An oval bust-length portrait of George Rooke (c. 1650–1709) in a long wig and armour. The portrait is surrounded by a thick oval border above a fictive stone plinth, which is lettered with the title: ‘Sr. George Rooke.’ This print was published by John Hinton as an illustration in ‘The Universal Magazine of Knowledge of Pleasure’, volume 21 (1757), page 172, alongside an account of ‘The Life of Sir George Rooke’, pp. 172–8 and 197–204. The portrait is derived in reverse from an oil painting by Michael Dahl, which had previously been engraved by Robert Williams and published by John Smith (see PAD4692). This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line. (Updated May 2019).
