Sr Chas Wager, Knt. Admiral of the White & First Lord of the Admiralty. Died 1743 Aged 77. Engrav'd for Hervey's Naval History

An oval bust-length portrait of Sir Charles Wager (1666–1743) wearing a long wig and a metal breastplate under his coat. The portrait is surrounded by a thick frame and rests on top of a fictive stone plinth with a flag, cannon balls and a laurel branch. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Sr Chas. Wager, Knt. Admiral of the White & first Lord of the Admiralty. Died 1743 Aged 77.’ Also lettered, at the top, ‘Engrav’d for Hervey’s Naval History. Vol. IV. p. 90’ and, at the bottom, ‘Heath sc.’ This print was engraved by James Heath and published as an illustration in Frederic Hervey’s ‘The naval history of Great Britain; from the earliest Times to the Rising of the Parliament in 1779’ (London, 1779), volume 4, book 6, chapter 2, page 90. The portrait is derived, in reverse, from Thomas Gibson’s oil painting of 1731 (see BHC3072) or, more likely, from John Faber the Younger’s 1732 engraving after Gibson’s painting (see PAF3357).
