Adml. Boscawen
A circular bust-length portrait of Edward Boscawen (1711–1761) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Adml. Boscawen’, and the production details, ‘C. Townley sculpt.’ This print was engraved by Charles Townley, an engraver and portraitist in oils and pastels (not be confused with the collector of the same name). The portrait is derived from Joshua Reynolds’s full-length oil painting of 1755–57, now in the collection of Lord Falmouth. A nineteenth-century copy of Reynolds’s painting is in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2565). (Updated April 2019.)
