The Honble. Edwd. Boscawen, Adml. of the Blue. Engraved for the Military Dictionary
An oval half-length portrait of Edward Boscawen (1711–1761) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered above the image, ‘Engrav’d for the Military Dictionary’, and below, ‘The Honble. Edwd. Boscawen, Adml. of the Blue &c.’ Manuscript inscription in ink outside the plate mark: ‘This should be opposite the Dedication.’ This portrait is based on Joshua Reynolds’s full-length oil painting of 1755–57, now in the collection of Lord Falmouth. A nineteenth-century copy of Reynolds’s painting is in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2565). The print was published as an illustration opposite the dedication in ‘A New Military Dictionary: or, the Field of War…by a Military Gentleman’ (London: J. Cooke, 1760). (Updated May 2019.)
