Lord Anson. The Autograph of Lord Anson, devoted humble Servant Anson. From an Original Letter in the Possession of John Thane

An oval bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in flag-officer’s full-dress uniform, 1748–67, and a wig. Lettered beneath the image with a facsimile of the sitter’s autograph (‘From an Original Letter in the Possession of John Thane’) and the title ‘Lord Anson’. This print was published by John Thane, a printseller and engraver who was known as an early collector of autographs. He published ‘British Autography, a Collection of Facsimiles of the Hand-writing of Royal and Illustrious Personages, with their Authentic Portraits’ in 1788–93. (Updated June 2019.)
