Lord Anson

A circular bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in flag-officer’s full-dress uniform, 1748–67, and a wig. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Lord Anson’, and the engraver’s name, ‘Ravenet sculpt.’ This print was engraved by Simon François Ravenet and published as an illustration in Tobias Smollett, ‘A Complete History of England, From the Descent of Julius Caesar to the Treaty of Aix la Chapelle, 1748’ (London: Richard Baldwin, 1760) volume 11, opposite page 192. The portrait is derived, in reverse, from Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1753–5, a version of which is now at Shugborough. (Updated May 2019.)
