The Rt Hon Geo: Lord Anson. Baron of Seberton Vice Admiral of the Red, and one of the Lords of the Admiralty
An oval bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in a queue wig, waistcoat and coat. The portrait is surrounded by a thick frame, topped with a laurel crown. Underneath the portrait, an anchor, a cannon and chain-shot (representing the navy) and palm and laurel branches (representing victory) rest on top of a fictive stone pillar, lettered with the title: ‘The Rt. Hon. Geo. Lord Anson. Baron of Soberton Vice Admiral of the Red and one of the Lords of the Admiralty.’ This print was published by John Hinton as an illustration in ‘The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure’, volume 3, supplement (1748), opposite page 315, alongside an account of ‘Lord Anson’s Voyage round the World’. The portrait is based on a portrait by Arthur Pond, which was engraved by Charles Grignion in 1744 (see PAG6365). This impression of the print has been cut down, removing the publication line.
