George Lord Anson
A circular portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in profile in the style of a classical bust. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘George Lord Anson.’ This portrait was engraved by Cantelowe Bestland after Thomas Pingo’s medal of 1747 (see MEC1136). The print was published by Bestland on 1 June 1803 and appeared as an illustration in George Owen Cambridge’s ‘The Works of Richard Owen Cambridge, Esq.’ (London: Luke Hansard, 1803), opposite page xlviii, alongside a passage in a biographical account of the poet Richard Owen Cambridge describing his friendship with Anson. This impression has been cut down, removing the production details and the publication line. (Updated May 2019.)
