An oval bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered in Italian with the title in an ornamental cartouche beneath the portrait: ‘Milord Giorgio Anson, Barone di Soberton, uno de’Lordi del Consiglio private di Sue Maestá, Viceammiraglio della gran Brettagna Ammiraglio delle Blú della Flotta di Sua Maestá, e primo Lord delegato dell’ Ammiralitá.’ (Translation: ‘Lord George Anson, Baron of Soberton, one of the Lords of His Majesty’s Privy Council, Vice-Admiral of Great Britain, Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majesty’s Fleet, and First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty.’) Also lettered beneath the portrait with the engraver’s details: ‘Gio: Lap sculp.’ This mid-eighteenth-century Italian print was engraved by Giovani Lapi. The portrait is after the Dutch engraver Jacob Houbraken’s print after a portrait drawn from the life by Jan Wandelaar, several versions of which were circulating in Europe at this time (see PAD4667, PAF3415 and PAF3416).
