Edward Augustus Duke of York. From the original Picture in Her Majesty's Collection at Buckingham Palace
An oval half-length portrait of Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1739–1767) in profile to left wearing flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–83, with the star of the Order of the Garter and a cockade hat and holding a horse-whip under his arm. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Edward Augustus, Duke of York. From the original Picture in Her Majesty’s Collection at Buckingham Palace.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Sir Joshua Reynolds / G. H. Every / London. Henry Graves & Compy. 6 Pall Mall 1865.’ This portrait was engraved by George H. Every after Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1765. The print was published in 1865 by Henry Graves & Co. Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, was the younger brother of George III. Entering the navy in 1758, he cultivated a public reputation as a glamorous and valiant officer, although his service record was somewhat equivocal: he was involved in a failed assault on Saint-Malo in June 1758 and a successful raid on Cherbourg in August 1758. His seagoing career ened after his brother ascended to the throne in 1760. He was painted twice by Reynols in the 1760s and both pictures, incluing the one depicted in this print, are in the Royal Collection. (Updated June 2019.)
