Admiral Sr Chas Saunders
An oval bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with the ribbon of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Sr. Chas. Saunders.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line, ‘J. Chapman sculp. / Publish’d as the act directs Sept. 1st 1800.’ This portrait was engraved and published by John Chapman in 1800. It appears to be loosely derived, in reverse, from Richard Brompton’s three-quarter-length portrait of 1772–3 (see BHC3011), with significant alterations to the uniform. (Updated May 2019.)
