Admiral Saunders
An octagonal bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered beneath the image, ‘Admiral Saunders’. This portrait is derived, in reverse, from Joshua Reynolds’s three-quarter-length oil painting of around 1760 (see BHC2823), possibly via another print. The print was published as an engraving in John Barrow, ‘The Naval History of Great Britain; With the Lives of the most Illustrious Admirals and Commanders, Deduced from the earliest Establishment of the British Marine…In Four Volumes’ (London: T. Lownds, 1761), volume 4, opposite page 392. (Updated May 2019.)
