Admiral Saunders
A circular bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. Lettered in the frame of the portrait with the title, ‘Admiral Saunders’, and the production details, ‘Hall sculp’. This print was engraved by John Hall, an engraver active in London between 1767 and 1797. The portrait is derived in reverse from Joshua Reynolds’s three-quarter-length oil painting of around 1760 (see BHC2823), possibly via another engraving. (Updated May 2019.)
