An oval bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–87, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, raising his left arm. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Sir Charles Saunders K.B. Admiral of the Blue Squadron, First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, Member of his Majesty’s most Honorable Privy Council, and Treasurer of Greenwich Hospital. From an Original Picture in Greenwich Hospital.’ Also lettered with the production details, ‘Shipster sculp.’ This portrait was engraved by Robert Shipster after Richard Brompton’s three-quarter-length portrait of 1772–3 (see BHC3011). The print was published by Robert Faulder in 1 July 1799 and also appeared as a frontispiece in John Charnock’s ‘Biographia Navalis; or, Impartial Memoirs of the Lives and Characters of Officers of the Navy of Great Britain, From the Year 1660 to the Present Time’ (London: R. Faulder, 1795), volume 3. This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line. (Updated May 2019.)
