Admiral Saunders. Engraved for the Royal Magazine
An oval bust-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. The portrait is framed with ribbons. Lettered above the image: ‘Engraved for the Royal Magazine’. Also lettered underneath the image with the title and production details: ‘Admiral Saunders / J. Hulett sculp.’ This print was engraved by James Hulett and published as an illustration in ‘The Royal Magazine, or, Gentleman’s Monthly Companion’, volume 3, August 1760, opposite page 57, alongside ‘A succinct Account of the gallant Actions of Charles Saunders, Vice-Admiral of the Blue’, pp. 57–59. The portrait is based on Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1760 (see BHC3012), which was first engraved by James Macardell (see PAF3691). (Updated April 2019.)
