Captn Hervey

An oval bust-length portrait of Augustus John Hervey, third earl of Bristol (1724–1779) in captain’s undress uniform, 1748–67. The portrait is surrounded by a thick frame and set upon a fictive stone plinth inscribed with the title: ‘Captn, Hervey.’ A telescope, symbolising the naval profession, rests on top of the plinth and branches of laurel and palm, representing victory, lie in front of it. This portrait was published by Robert Baldwin in the ‘London Magazine, or Gentleman’s Monthly Intelligencer’, volume 32 (November 1763). The portrait is based on Joshua Reynolds’s painting of 1762, which is now owned by the St Edmundsbury Heritage Service and on loan to the National Trust at Ickworth. Reynolds’s portrait was engraved in mezzotint by Edward Fisher in 1763 (see PAF3442). (Updated May 2019.)
