group study of the Gravesend Borough Police Force, taken at the Swan Yard at the back of the fire station in Gravesend. The Chief Constable sitting in the middle of the front row is named Thornton. On either side of him are Inspector Thurley and Inspector Martin. there are five sergeants in the front row and the rest of the group comprises 31 constables. A moustache appears to be obligatory but only one man, a sergeant, has a beard as well.
