Sr Edward Hawke
An oval bust-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) wearing a wig and the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. The portrait is surrounded by sprigs of laurel and hangs above a cartouche, in which is represented a naval engagement. Lettered below the image with the title: ‘Sr. Edward Hawke.’ This print was published in ‘The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure’, volume 27, August 1760, page 82, alongside a short biography of Hawke (pp. 82–4). The portrait is based on an oil painting by George Knapton, which was first engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell around 1747 (see PAF3453). (Updated May 2019.)
