Commodore Keppel
An oval bust-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) facing to right in captain’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with a black neck tie. The portrait is set in an ornamental oval frame. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Commodore Keppel’, and the engraver’s name, ‘Sherlock sculp.’ This portrait is derived, in reverse, from Joshua Reynolds’s portrait of 1752–3 (see BHC2823), which was engraved in mezzotint by Edward Fisher in 1759 (see PAI5851).
