Commodore Keppel
An octagonal bust-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) facing to right in captain’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with a black neck tie. The portrait is set in an ornamental oval frame. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Commodore Keppel’. This portrait is derived from Joshua Reynolds’s portrait of 1752–3 (see BHC2823), which was engraved in mezzotint by Edward Fisher in 1759 (see PAI5851). The print was published as an engraving in John Barrow, ‘The Naval History of Great Britain; With the Lives of the most Illustrious Admirals and Commanders, Deduced from the earliest Establishment of the British Marine…In Four Volumes’ (London: T. Lownds, 1761), volume 4, opposite page 308. (Updated May 2019.)
