Adml Keppel

A bust-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–67, looking to the left. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Adml. Keppel.’, and the production details ‘Sir Joshua Reynolds Pinxt. S. W. Reynolds Sculp.’ This print was engraved in mezzotint in the nineteenth century by Samuel William Reynolds. It is derived from an original painting by Joshua Reynolds, who was a lifelong friend of the sitter and painted his portrait many times. There are two versions of the painting, both produced around 1765 – one is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2820), the other in the National Portrait Gallery. However, it is probable that Samuel William Reynolds did not work directly from the painting but instead used William Doughty’s earlier mezzotint (see PAH5415) as his source for this print. Samuel William Reynolds was a successful mezzotint engraver, who produced a large number of engravings after works by his namesake Sir Joshua Reynolds (no relation) in the 1820s. (Updated April 2019.)
Print, derived (19th century) from BHC2820, but probably after the earlier print of which the metal plate is LTN0001
