Sr John Lockhart Ross Bart Vice Admiral of the Blue
An oval bust-length portrait of John Lockhart Ross (1721–1790) in captain’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with his right arm raised. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title: ‘Sr. John Lockhart Ross, Bart. Vice Admiral of the Blue.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line, ‘Sir Jos. Reynolds pinx. 1760 / Ridley sc.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley after Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1760–2 (private collection). It was published by Joyce Gold and John Bunney on 1 August 1801 as an illustration in the ‘Naval Chronicle’, volume 6, opposite page 1, where it appeared alongside ‘Biographical Memoirs of Sir John Lockhart Ross, Bart. Vice-Admiral of the Blue’ (pp. 1–25). This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line. Stored in a mount with PAD2987. (Updated May 2019.)
