An oval bust-length portrait of George Bridges Rodney (bap. 1718, d. 1792) in vice-admiral’s undress uniform, 1767–1787, with the star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the portrait with the title, ‘George Lord Rodney.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Engraved for the Senator. / Drawn from Life by W.H. Brown, Engraved by C. Warren, and Published according to Act of Parliament, by C. Cooke, No.27 Paternoster row, Mar. 24, 1793.’ This print was published by Charles Cooke in 1793 as an illustration for the periodical, ‘The Senator; or Clarendon’s Parliamentary Chronicle’. It was engraved by Charles Turner Warren. The print’s inscription claims that the portrait was based on a drawing from the life by W. H. Brown, although the image bears a resemblance (in reverse) to Thomas Gainsborough’s painting of 1783–6, which was engraved by Gainsborough Dupont and published by Benjamin Beale Evans in 1788 (see PAH5430).
