Lord Rodney From a Picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds in his Majesty's Collection at St. James's Palace

A half-length portrait to right of George Bridges Rodney (bap. 1718, d. 1792) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1787–1795, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Lord Rodney. From a Picture by Sir Joshua Reynolds in his Majesty’s Collection at St. James’s Palace.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Engraved by E. Scriven.’ This print was engraved by Edward Scriven after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds’s full-length portrait was painted for the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1788–89. Today, the painting remains in the Royal Collection; the National Maritime Museum holds a nineteenth-century copy of the painting (see BHC2971). This print was published by Charles Knight in ‘The Gallery of Portraits, with Memoirs’, volume 2 (1833), page 82, together with a biographical account of Rodney’s life (pp. 81–87). This text was published for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, an organisation founded in 1826 with the object of publishing information to people who were unable to obtain formal teaching, or who preferred self-education. This impression has been cut down, removing the publication line. (Updated April 2019.)
