Captn Robt Faulknor RN
An oval bust-length portrait of Robert Faulknor (1763–1795) in captain’s full-dress uniform, 1787–95. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title: ‘Captn. Robt. Faulknor R. N.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Ridley & Holl Scu. / Published 31 July 1806 by I. Gold, 103 Shoe Lane, Fleet Street.’ This print was engraved by William Ridley and William Holl after a portrait by James Roberts, which had previously been engraved by H. D. Gardner in 1795 (see PAF3481). Ridley and Holl’s print was published by Joyce Gold, the publisher of the ‘Naval Chronicle’, in July 1806. It appeared as an illustration in volume 16 of the ‘Naval Chronicle’ (July–December 1806), together with a ‘Biographical Memoir of the Late Captain Robert Faulknor’ (pp. 1–46). Faulknor came from long line of naval officers. As captain of the ‘Blanche’, 32 guns, he was killed on 5 January 1795 in a violent engagement with the French frigate ‘Pique’, 32 guns.
