Admiral Barrington
Portrait.
An oval bust-length portrait of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in flag officer’s full dress uniform, 1767–1783. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Admiral Barrington’, and the publication details: ‘J. Chapman sc. / Published as the Act directs Octr. 1st 1801.’ This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by John Chapman after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds’s painting was produced in 1779 and is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2534). The painting had previously been engraved in mezzotint by Richard Earlom in 1780 (see PAG6435). John Chapman may have based this print on Earlom’s engraving, rather than the original painting. (Updated April 2019.)
