Honble Samuel Barrington. Admiral of the White
A half-length portrait of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative border with the sitter’s coat of arms at the top. Lettered underneath the image ‘Honble. Samuel Barrington, Admiral of the White’ and ‘Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, P. R. A. / Engraved by H. T. Ryall.’ This portrait was engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds in the Greenwich Hospital Collection (see BHC2534). Reynolds’s portrait was presented to Greenwich Hospital by the sitter’s younger brother Shute Barrington, Bishop of Durham. This print is a later reprint, with added decorative border, from the plate engraved for E. H. Locker's 'Memoirs of Celebrated Naval Commanders...' (1831) and originally published by Harding and Lepard on 1 June 1831. This impression has been cut down, removing part of the inscription and the publication line (for a complete impression, see PAI9222). (Updated April 2019.)
