Unidentified Barque

A whole plate negative. A poor quality port near broadside view, taken from just ahead of the beam, of an almost completely dismasted unidentified barque at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. The vessel is a Scandinavian "onker" type with the remains of her wind pump just ahead of the mizzen mast. The foremast is completely missing, the mainmast is snapped off about six feet above the deck and the mizzen mast is intact but the mizzen topmast is broken off. Only the mizzen mast has any standing rigging. The hull is low in the water. Tilbury Fort Watergate is in the background. The emulsion has completely peeled off and the negative has been discarded. A 12x10 photographic print produced in the 1950s from the original negative is available but it is badly marked because of the poor condition of the negative at the time.
