Samuel Lord Hood. Member for Westminster. Engraved for the Senator Drawn from the Life by W.H. Brown, Engraved by W. Grainger

An oval bust-length portrait of Samuel Hood (1724–1816) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–83, and a wig. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Samuel Lord Hood. Member for Westminster.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Engraved for the Senator. Drawn from the Life by W.H. Brown, Engraved by W. Grainger & Publish’d according to Act of Parliament by C. Cooke, no.17 Paternoster row, May 11th 1791.’ This print was published by Charles Cooke in 1791 as an illustration for the periodical, ‘The Senator; or Clarendon’s Parliamentary Chronicle’. It was engraved by William Grainger. The print’s inscription claims that the portrait was based on a drawing from the life by W. H. Brown, although the image bears a resemblance to James Northcote’s painting of 1784 (see BHC2774). (Updated May 2019.)
