Full-length figurehead of an eaglefrom an unidentified merchant ship.

A full length figurehead of an eagle, painted gold, with its wings outstretched and standing on the black and gold scrollwork of the stem-post. The origin of the figurehead is uncertain, but it may be American as there is the possibility that the ship was built there. The type of eagle is not identifiable – none have the feather ‘ruff’ around the neck – but it is emblematic of the United States, where the bald eagle is the national bird. It also appears on the nation’s Great Seal, grasping thirteen arrows representing the founding states of the Union – in its left talon and an olive branch of peace in its right. The tip of left wing has broken off.
