A small full-length polychrome figurehead of a huntsman from the schooner-rigged merchant ship Tantivy (1837).

A small full-length polychrome figurehead of a huntsman from the schooner-rigged merchant ship Tantivy (1837). A 'tantivy' is the cry used during hunting, as well as meaning a rapid gallop, both appropriate for this figurehead. It depicts a huntsman wearing a hunt-style helmet and a black-edged scarlet jacket with a white high-collared shirt tied with a black stock tie. In his white-gloved right hand is a large extended fox’s tail (brush). He holds a whip and cane in his left hand and has a riding horn slung down his right side. Complying with the dress code for a ‘Gentleman Member with Colours’, he is also wearing white breeches and black boots with brown leather tops.
