A three-quarter length polychrome figurehead of a woman dressed in black with a white apron and white collar, referred to as 'Old Goody'
A three-quarter length polychrome figurehead of a woman dressed in black with a white apron and white collar. Her right hand is across her chest, partially obscured by her shawl. She has a gold necklace. A black purse is tied with gold string to the waistband (left side). Her light brown hair is tied up at the back and a red flower and green leaves are in her hair, some of which is worn down. She has blue eyes.
The name Old Goody refers to an old English form of address for a woman and was an informal, shortened version of ‘goodwife’. The figurehead is reputedly from a wrecked schooner and was later mounted above the door of a butcher’s shop in Faversham before being acquired by Sydney Cumbers.
