A half-length polychrome figurehead said to represent Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of Egypt (69-30 BCE) from an unknown ship
A half-length polychrome figurehead said to represent Cleopatra, the last Pharaoh of Egypt (69-30 BCE) from an unknown ship. It is not known if this is the figurehead from a merchant ship or a warship (HMS Cleopatra, 1878, did not have a figurehead, instead had a cartouche and scroll decoration). The clothing does not directly support this identification as Cleopatra. She is dressed in ‘fish scale’ armour edged in red and gold more closely associated with Rome, Persia and Dacia than Egypt. The missing arms were likely to have been detachable, a reflection of its original construction. The helmet is gold with a peak and chin strap. Her hair is worn loose at the back. The figurehead sits on the top of the stempost scroll work, painted brown with gold and silver.
