A large full-length polychrome figurehead possibly representing Bertha Marion Coghill (1863-1950) from the barque Bertha Marion (1864).
A large full-length polychrome figurehead possibly representing Bertha Marion Coghill (1863-1950) from the barque Bertha Marion (1864). She is wearing a blue over jacket with white trim and a white and gold-edged belt. Beneath this is a black skirt and a blue shirt edged in gold. Her left arm is by her side while her right is across her chest holding a red rose (part of right hand and forearm missing). Marion's blond hair is tide up at the back and she is wearing gold earrings.
Bertha Marion was the daughter of the merchant and ship owner Harry Coghill. She was born in 1863 in Newcastle and the ship, named after her, was launched a year later. However, the carving is of a grown woman rather than an infant, raising rather obvious questions about who the figurehead depicts. It may, of course, be a generic design. The ship was later renamed Beda in 1890 when sold to Norwegian owners.
