A full-length figurehead of Abraham Lincoln from a wooden barque
A full-length figurehead (feet missing) of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the sixteenth President of the United State, possibly from the Abraham Lincoln (1865), a wooden barque wrecked off the Black Gang Chines, south side of the Isle of Wight.
Lincoln's characteristic hair and beard have been captured by the carver, making him easily recognisable. The figurehead reflects photographs of him in formal attire of white trousers and shirt, with a yellow waistcoat and black bow tie, although the coat, normally open, has been buttoned up and his right hand is placed between the flaps. His left hand is in his trousers pocket and a flattened top hat is under the left arm.
