A half-length polychrome figurehead of Benjamin Disraeli (1804-81) from an unknown merchant ship.
A half-length polychrome figurehead representing the British Conservative politician and Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli (1804-81) from an unknown merchant ship. The figurehead represents Disraeli as a younger man with his characteristic unruly hair, sideburns, and short ‘goatee’ beard. He is wearing a white high-collared shirt, black bow tie, cream waistcoat and long black jacket, all inspired by the many photographs and portraits of him. He ended his lengthy political career in the House of Lords as the Earl of Beaconsfield. Disraeli’s politics were closely identified with the British Empire and its projected glories, although under his premiership he also instigated social reforms.
The figurehead was apparently found by Sydney Cumbers under the eaves of the sail loft of Beeching and Moses, shipbuilders at Ramsgate, along with the Duchesse figurehead.
