A half-length bust figurehead thought to represent William Pitt (the Younger) from an unknown ship.

A half-length bust figurehead believed to represent the British politician William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806), from an unknown sailing ship.

It depicts Pitt in a black coat with yellow waistcoat, a white shirt and black bow tie. He has light brown hair, brown glass eyes and facing forwards.

When appointed in 1783, William Pitt the Younger (1759–1806) became Britain’s youngest Prime Minister aged only 24. He was in post until 1801 and again from 1804 to his death in 1806. He dominated politics during a series of national crises, including the end of the War of American Independence, the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and the constitutional pressures of George III’s illness. Tens of thousands of mourners passed his coffin when he lay in state, emphasising Pitt’s popularity. Rather appropriately for a figurehead, he became a symbol of duty and dedication against sometimes impossible odds.
