A half-length polychrome figurehead of a woman wearing a light blue wrap, commonly referred to as Duchesse

A half-length polychrome figurehead of a woman wearing a light blue wrap over a pale pink dress from an unknown merchant ship. This colour scheme is not original but the result of later repainting. The origin of the name 'Duchesse' is unclear. The figurehead is wearing a laurel wreath on her head, suggesting that she is a Greco-Roman goddess or some other mythical character. However, there is no accompanying iconography to indicate who she may have been. The wreath was usually awarded for a victory or seen as a symbol of peace. Sydney Cumbers recovered the figurehead, plus the one of Disraeli, from a sail loft at the Ramsgate shipyard of Beeching, Moses and Co.
